Mr. John Pennington of the Beaver Watershed Alliance announced that Ms. Patti Erwin, Urban Forestry Coordinator of the Arkansas Forestry Commission will undertake a presentation addressing enhancement of the “green” in a community.
The presentation is the next in a speaker series titled Investing in Water Supply Protection and will be held on May 19th in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Mr. Pennington states that the presentation will focus on the various benefits of healthy working forests to our communities. He quotes Ms. Erwin who states:
… Presence of healthy urban forests have been shown to increase the health and economic vitality of communities in addition to protecting water quality and providing numerous invaluable ecosystem services.
Mr. Pennington notes in the announcement:
Forested land in the Beaver Lake Watershed currently accounts for 71% of the land cover, but is anticipated to decline by 10% over the next 35 years at it is replaced by urban areas to accommodate the region’s growing population. Working with communities and landowners now to promote benefits of forestry will assist thoughtful growth and retention of forested land in the future. Healthy forests not only benefit long term water quality of surface water drinking supplies, but also increase health and economic vitality of communities and provide habitat for wildlife as well as many other ecosystem services.
The program is free (including lunch) and will be held at the Staybridge Suites, University Room, located at 1577 West 15th Street in Fayetteville from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00.
