The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) issued a February 16th news release announcing the awarding of grants to 38 student teams for “innovative sustainable projects”.
One of the grants has been awarded to a team from the University of Arkansas (“U of A”) in Fayetteville.
The EPA grants are denominated People, Prosperity and the Plant (P3) and are awarded for projects to develop “new, sustainable products and strategies”. Each team can receive up to $15,000 for their proposals.
The EPA announcement describes the U of A project as a “Biosensor design for infectious water-borne agents”.
The U of A project’s objective is described as:
Low cost, diagnostic platforms capable of detecting the presence of water borne agents can be developed to operate a minimalist environment by individuals with a modicum of formal training with the device
The expected results are stated to include:
The P3 effort will demonstrate the use of LAMP to detect water borne agents, examine sensitivity limits of our design, and provide the basis for packaging into a small, disposable device capable of self heating and visual identification of a positive result. We also will develop educational tools for deployment in a K-12 environment that demonstrates PCR use for pathogen detection.
