The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) in a February 29th Federal Register Notice announced the availability of a document titled Regional Monitoring Networks (RMNs) To Detect Changing Baselines in Freshwater Wadeable Streams (“Document”). See 81 Fed. Reg. 10240.
EPA states that the Document was prepared by the National Center for Environmental Assessment which is part of the agency’s Office of Research and Development.
The Document is described as reviewing the development of the current Regional Monitoring Networks for riffle-streams.
EPA states it is working with its regional offices, states, tribes, river basin commissions, and other entities to establish Regional Monitoring Networks for freshwater wadeable streams. Such networks are stated to have been established in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast.
The Document describes the development and implementation of the Regional Monitoring Networks and includes:
- Information on selection of sites
- Expectations for data collection
- Rationale for collecting data
- Data infrastructure
- Examples of how the Regional Monitoring Networks data will be used and analyzed
The Document also includes a discussion on the status of monitoring activities/next steps.
