The California Energy Commission (“CEC”) adopted on August 11th :
2022 Building Energy Efficiency Standards (“2022 Energy Code”)
The 2022 Energy Code is applicable to newly constructed and renovated buildings.
The 2022 Energy Code must be submitted to the California Building Standards Commission for approval.
The 2022 Energy Code is a part of the CEC’s process in which it adopts standards every three years in what it describes as an effort to:
. . . cost-effectively increase the energy efficiency and lower the carbon footprint of buildings.
The CEC identifies what it describes as four key areas that are a focus in the 2022 Energy Code:
- Encouraging electric heat pump technology for space and water heating
- Establishing electric-ready requirements for single-family homes to position homeowners to use what it describes as cleaner electric heating, cooking and electric vehicle charging options whenever they choose to adopt these technologies
- Expanding solar photovoltaic system and battery storage standards
- Strengthening ventilation standards
The CEC claims that the 2022 Energy Code will over the next 30 years provide $1.5 billion in consumer benefits and reduce 10 million metric tons of greenhouse gasses.
