Fayetteville, Arkansas, has been named one of two 2022 Program of the Year winners by the national publication Resource Recycling.
Washington, D.C., was the other city that won the award.
The awards will be presented at the 2022 Recourse Recycling Conference in Austin, Texas, in August.
Fayetteville was selected from a field of three finalists in the “Small City” category. The other two finalists were Marquette County, Michigan, and San Marcos, Texas.
Judges selecting the award winners are described as industry professionals representing different segments of the municipal recycling sector.
The Resource Recycling announcement states that Fayetteville uses a dual-stream collection system in which city crews collect recyclables from nearly 16,600 houses and apartment units and food scraps from commercial establishments.
Fayetteville collected in 2021:
- 6,570 tons of recyclables
- 876 tons of food scraps
- 17 tons of household hazardous waste
The contamination rate for its recyclables is stated to be less than two percent.
The announcement also notes the City has a goal of 40% diversion from landfill by 2027 and participates in:
- Educational efforts through presentations
- News and social media
- Tours
- School, community groups, public library, and environmental education events
- Removal of contaminants during collection
- Operation of a residential food waste program
- Providing recycling service for small apartment buildings
