The American Water Works Association (“AWWA”) announced in a June 9 news release that the organization’s Heroism Award is going to be presented to two Central Arkansas Water (“CAW”) employees.
The CAW employees are Stephen Shirley and Chris Duncan.
Mr. Shirley serves as a foreman and Duncan a water distribution specialist II at CAW.
The Heroism Award is described as recognizing:
…an act of heroism on the part of an employee(s) in the water utility profession wherein he or she, in the process of aiding some other person or persons, must have placed himself/herself at great personal risk.
In selecting these two individuals AWWA states that Mr. Duncan and Mr. Shirley helped two injured gunshot victims who were involved in a three-vehicle car accident at an intersection in front of their crew truck. As described by AWWA, it states that once the scene was determined to be safe, they provided life-saving measures until emergency responders arrived. In addition, they helped a woman in another vehicle who was bleeding and shot.
The awards will be presented during AWWA’s Annual Conference and Exposition in Toronto, Canada.
The AWWA describes itself as an international, non-profit, scientific educational society dedicated to providing total water solutions assuring the effective management of water. Its membership includes over 4300 utilities that supply roughly 80% of the United States’ drinking water and treat almost half of the nation’s wastewater.
