The Arkansas Abandoned Pesticide Advisory Board (“Board”) is scheduled to meet on October 21st.
The meeting will be held via Zoom.
The Arkansas Department of Agriculture (“Department”) describes the Arkansas Abandoned Pesticide program (“Program”) as a method of farmers to safely and properly dispose of old or unwanted pesticides.
State statutory authority for the Board is found in Ark. Code § 8-7-1204.
The Board consists of six members which include:
- Representative from the Arkansas Farm Bureau Federation
- Representative from the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission
- Representative from the University Cooperative Extension Service
- Representative from the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment – Division of Environmental Quality
- Representative from the United States Natural Resources Conservation Service
- Representative from the Arkansas Department of Agriculture
The Board is stated to select 10 counties per year with a goal of holding at least one pesticide collection event in every county in Arkansas. The Department states that the program has since 2005 overseen the collection of 4,842,821 pounds of unwanted pesticides in Arkansas.
Participation in collection activities is both free and anonymous to farmers and other non-industrial landowners. The pesticide collections are funded by pesticide manufacturers through a fee added to the registration of each agricultural pesticide registered in the Arkansas.
The October 21st agenda references “proposed legislation” in addition to standard business items.
