The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) issued a March 9th news release addressing the Biden Administration’s fiscal year 2024 budget request.
The Biden Administration is requesting $12 billion in discretionary budget authority for EPA in 2024.
The $12 billion request for EPA represents a 19 percent increase from the fiscal year 2023 enacted level.
The total budget request for the federal government for mandatory and discretionary spending for 2024 is $6.9 trillion.
Identified as “highlights” of the FY2024 EPA budget are:
- Climate – Includes $5 billion for reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Environmental Justice - $1.8 billion
- Upgrading drinking water/wastewater Infrastructure/replacing lead pipes - $4 billion
- Clean air - $1.4 billion
- Hazardous waste/environmental damage
- $350 million for the Superfund program
- $215 million for Brownfield programs
- Chemical safety - $130 million
- PFAS - $170 million
- Enforcement – $46 million
The eventual enactment of the budget as requested is far from certain. Republicans are expected to oppose the various increases in both the EPA and other parts of the President’s FY2024 budget.
