The American Chemistry Council (“ACC”) released a document titled:
Butadiene – Product Stewardship Guidance Manual (2019) (“Manual”)
The Manual was prepared by ACC’s Olefins Panel.
ACC states the Manual’s intention is to:
. . . provide general information to persons who may handle or store butadiene.
The focus of the Manual is the “health, safety, and environmental aspects” associated with manufacturing, distributing, using, and disposing of 1,3-Butadiene.
1,3-Butadiene is described as having a simple chemical structure combined with low molecular weight (along with high chemical reactivity) which makes it a useful building block in the “synthesis of other materials.” It is stated to be utilized primarily as:
- a monomer in the production of a wide range of polymers and copolymers
- an intermediate in the production of certain chemicals
The Manual’s five chapters address:
- Chemical Identification and Use
- Health and Environmental Effects
- Regulatory Overview
- Handling, Transport and Storage Information
- Fire Safety and Emergency Response
Four appendices address:
- Butadiene Manufacturing Process Information
- Information on Product Safety and Responsible Care
- References
- Glossary of Terms, Abbreviations, and Organizations
