The Solid Waste Association of North America (“SWANA”) submitted December 15th comments addressing China’s restrictions on waste imports.
The comments were submitted to:
- WTO/TBT National Notification and Enquiry Center of the People’s Republic of China
- The Ministry of the Environmental Protection (“MEP”) of the People’s Republic of China
The waste import restrictions are scheduled to take effect in 2018.
The comments:
- Request that China delay implementation of its waste import restrictions
- Ask that implementation of the waste import restrictions be suspended until January, 2022
- Address the impact that waste import restrictions have had on municipal solid waste recycling programs in the United States and Canada
- Request that MEP explain the basis for the Carried-Waste 0.5 percent contamination standard
- Express support for China’s efforts to protect and improve their environmental conditions
- Ask that the Chinese government meet with industry stakeholders from the United States, Canada, and other exporting countries to develop a mutually satisfactory Carried-Waste Contamination Standard
