The U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (“Association”) announced Tyson Foods (Springdale, Arkansas) has been awarded that organization’s 2020 Clean Water Award.
Tyson Foods was recognized for its New Holland, Pennsylvania, Robards, Kentucky, and Berryville, Arkansas facilities.
Simmons Foods (Siloam Springs, Arkansas) was recognized for its Southwest City, Missouri, facility.
The Association states that the awards are presented annually:
. . . to poultry facilities that go above and beyond in their commitment to sustainable wastewater treatment and water reuse.
Winners are chosen by a committee that includes:
- Industry engineers
- University personnel
- Industry media
The two award categories include “full treatment” and “pretreatment.”
The Tyson facility broiler and further processing complex in New Holland, Pennsylvania, was selected in the full treatment category.
The Association news release describes the facility’s success in:
- Conserving energy (utilization of landfill gas as a fuel source)
- Water use reduction (training/review of water saving opportunities)
The Tyson Robards’ poultry processing/rendering facility was chosen as the winner in the pretreatment category.
The Association news release describes the facility’s success in:
- Water use reduction (describing a water reuse system and water-efficient faucets)
- Resource conservation (recycling chicken byproduct)
- Energy efficiency (use of energy-efficient lighting)
The Tyson Food facility in Berryville, Arkansas, was recognized with an honorable mention with distinction award in the pretreatment category. Simmons Foods’ facility in Southwest City, Missouri, was recognized with an honorable mention with distinction in the full treatment category.
