The Environmental Defense Fund issued a report titled:
Ambitious Climate Mitigation Pathways for U.S. Agriculture and Forestry: Vision for 2030 (“Report”)
Personnel from the climate consulting firm ICF served as co-authors of the Report.
The Report focuses on the contribution that the authors believe agriculture and forestry can make towards the United States goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions (“GHG”) by 50% by 2030. The Report theorizes how farms, ranches, and forests can move the United States 17% of the way toward the 2030 goal.
The Report outlines:
- Targets for reduced GHG emissions from United States agriculture
- Increased carbon storage from United States forestry
- The most impactful, lowest-cost pathways to achieve the targets
The Report argues that by 2030:
- U.S. farms and ranches can reduce agricultural emissions by 23%
- U.S. forest can boost carbon storage by 43%
Components of the Report include:
- Current landscape (i.e., categories of the annual emissions)
- Net emissions associated with land use, annual emissions by land use type, Importance of reducing methane/nitrous oxide emissions, equity and environmental justice issues
- Emissions reduction targets for the agriculture and forestry sectors: Vision for 2030
- Climate mitigation economic analysis: Overview
- Climate mitigation opportunity and economic analysis: Subsector detail
