The Beaver Watershed Alliance (“BWA”) is holding as part of a speaker series a webinar titled:
Harmful Algal Blooms (“Webinar”)
The Webinar will address harmful algal blooms (“HABs”) in Arkansas. It will address:
- Case studies on Lake Hamilton and Lake Fayetteville
- Harmful Algal Bloom Management Plan for Arkansas
- Recommended actions
HABs are overgrowths of algae in the water. Such blooms can produce toxins that can cause illness in people and animals. They can occur in warm, fresh, marine, branch water if abundant nutrients are present.
Aside from producing dangerous toxins, HABs can also:
- Create dead zones in water
- Increase treatment cost for drinking water
The speakers at the BWA Webinar will include Brie Olsen, Ecologist Coordinator in the Office of Water at the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment – Division of Environmental Quality; Dr. Brian Haggard, Executive Director with the Arkansas Water Resources.
The Webinar will be held on August 20 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.
Additional information regarding the presentation can be found here.
