The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) announced in a December 20th news release that it had added two sites to the Superfund National Priority List (“NPL”).
One of the sites is located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
The Hattiesburg site is described as being formerly the site of a 200-acre manufacturer located in a mixed residential, commercial, and industrial area. The description also notes:
During operations, over 250 chemical products, including paper and textile chemicals, paints, varnishes, pesticides, and insecticides were produced. Improper handling and disposal of these chemicals led to soil, waste, and groundwater contaminations in amounts that exceed EPA’s Regional Screening Levels (RSL) and Safe Drinking Water Act Maximum Contaminant Levels (“MCLs”).
