The United States Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) addressed in a September 2nd report (“Report”) trends associated with shipments of solar photovoltaic (“PV”) modules (i.e., solar panels) in the United States in 2020.
Solar panels shipped in the United States in 2020 are stated to have reached what is described as a “record high” of 21.8 million peak kilowatts (“kW”).
The numbers tabulated by EIA are stated to include:
- Imports
- Exports
- Panels produced and sold domestically
The Report indicates that 2020 demand for residential solar installations likely increased in part because:
- More people spending time at home focused on home improvement
- Expiring solar tax credits
- Continued utility-scale solar capacity
- Decreased cost for solar systems
EIA also notes that solar PV capacity additions in the United States increased 25% from 2019 to 2020. Further, utility-scale solar capacity is stated to have increased 29% and small-scale 19%.
