The Beaver Watershed Alliance (“BWA”) has scheduled a 2019 Annual Symposium titled:
Thoughtful Watershed Development: Retaining the Character of Small Communities (“Symposium”)
The Symposium will be held at the Elkins Community Center in Elkins, Arkansas on September 26th.
In describing the Symposium BWA notes:
Small communities and unincorporated areas in the Beaver Lake watershed face unique challenges as developmental pressures increase, the scope of growth expands, and both the sense of control and actual control over development at the small community level declines. The economic growth that is driving population increases in NWA at the same time seems to overrun small towns.
Issues to be addressed include:
- Challenges the watershed and these communities share
- Sustainable economic development – growth that won’t come back to haunt small communities with unintended consequences of cost, congestion, and conflict
- Planning framework – strong development codes for small communities
- Financial framework – drinking water and wastewater financing issues for small systems, and how possible threats and/or failures impact the actual cost of providing services for small towns
- Local examples – keeping the rural character and nature of communities
You may RSVP by calling 479-750-8007 or emailing info@beaverwatershedalliance.org.
