The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (“ADEQ”) announced that the agency received a January 11th letter from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) approving the discontinuance of an ambient air monitor.
ADEQ requested and EPA approved the discontinuance of the sulfur dioxide (“SO2”) ambient air monitor located in Union County, Arkansas.
The January 11th EPA letter was authored by the Associate Director for Air, Multimedia Division, Guy R. Donaldson for Region 6 of the agency.
SO2 is a Clean Air Act criteria air pollutant.
ADEQ had submitted a request for discontinuance in a December 20, 2016 letter to EPA. The state agency submitted analyses indicating that SO2 concentrations had been less than half of the 75 parts per billion National Ambient Air Quality Standard for this criteria air pollutant for a period of 10 years. As a result, EPA agreed that the monitor was no longer required pursuant to 40 C.F.R. 58.14(c).
