The United States Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) issued a September 11 report entitled:
EIA Expects U.S. Hydroelectric Generation to Increase in 2020 Despite Drought Conditions (“Report”)
The EIA Report forecasts that electricity generation from United States hydroelectric power plants will grow by four percent in 2020 from 2019 levels.
This growth is expected to occur despite United States drought conditions and wildfires in parts of the country (including the Pacific Northwest).
The Report notes that a number of factors affect how much water is available to generate hydroelectric power. These include precipitation levels.
The Report describes water supply conditions and precipitation amounts in various parts of the country. Despite the drought conditions in certain parts of the country, the Report concludes that as of September 2020, there is not expected to be a:
… noticeable impacts on hydroelectric power production because reservoirs in the region have stored water from near-normal to above-normal precipitation in recent years.
