The United States Army Corps of Engineers (Vicksburg District) (“Corps”) published an August 31st Public Notice stating that it is considering an application for a Section 404 Clean Water Act permit for the Union Pacific Railroad (“Union Pacific”). See MVK-2020-114.
The application addresses dredged and/or fill activities involving the replacement of a railroad bridge.
The location of the project is stated to be Bodcau Bayou Drainage Basin in LaFayette County, Arkansas. Placement of the structure (i.e., bridge) would consist of a 34-span, 838 foot long prestressed concrete box girder. The replacement bridge’s purpose is stated as providing:
. . . safe, more efficient and reliable railroad operations throughout this area in southwest Arkansas.
Bridge construction would result in impacts to:
- Forested wetland (1.37 acres) (permanent)
- Temporary impacts to non-forested wetland (0.98)
- Temporary impacts to an intermittent waterway (135 linear feet/0.22 acre)
- Temporary impacts to a perennial waterway (100 linear feet/0.47 acre)
Union Pacific is stated to be proposing to mitigate for the unavoidable loss of jurisdictional impacts through a mitigation bank.
