The United States Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) issued a January 18th report stating that it projects solar and wind will be the fastest growing source of United States electricity generation for the next two years.
The January 2019 EIA publication Short Term Energy Outlook forecast that:
. . . electricity generation from utility-scale solar generating units will grow by 10% in 2019 and by 17% in 2020.
Wind generation is projected to increase:
. . . 12% and 14% during the next two years.
Total United States electricity generation across all fuels is projected to decrease by 2% in 2019 and then “show very little growth in 2020.”
As to shares among the potential sources of electricity generation, renewables (other than hydropower) is projected to increase by 3 percentage points during the next two years. This would result in renewables constituting an increase of 3% from the current 10% to 13% in 2020.
The projected growth of renewables is stated to be due to new generating capacity that is expected to come online.
