The Illinois Attorney General (“AG”) announced in a February 14th news release that a lawsuit had been filed against Delaware-based GFL Environmental Services USA Inc. (“GFL”) in regards to an alleged 200,000 gallon leak of used oil.
The leak is stated to have been from an aboveground storage tank in Granite City, Illinois.
The action filed is stated to ask for a preliminary injunction in Madison County Circuit Court against GFL seeking to prevent used oil:
- from contaminating soil and groundwater
- leaking into nearby sewer system
The used oil is stated to have reached an adjacent property, the Granite City wastewater treatment plant, and the Granite City sewer canal.
The Court is stated to have entered an agreed injunction order which required the company to further investigate the site to:
- determine the full extent of the contamination
- clean up the impacted area
- submit a report describing the cause of the spill
- determine how the company plans to prevent future spills
