The United States Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works Committee (“Committee”) announced in an April 21st news release the preparation of two draft bills addressing water resources development and drinking water legislation.
The Committee states that the legislation was released on behalf of United States Senators John Barrasso (R-Wyoming) and Tom Carper (D-Delaware).
The two bills are titled:
- America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2020 (“AWIA 2020”)
- Drinking Water Infrastructure Act of 2020 (“DWIA 2020”)
The AWIA is described as including:
- $17 billion in new federal authorizations
- Facilitating increase in water storage
- Flood water protection
- Deepening nationally significant ports
- Maintaining navigability of inland waterways
- Repair of wastewater/irrigation systems
The DWIA is describing as including:
- $2.5 billion in federal authorizations
- Reauthorizing Safe Drinking Water Act programs
