The American Petroleum Institute (“API”) issued a news releases stating that it has published a new standard (i.e., Recommended Practice) that addresses:
. . . the closure and remediation of natural gas and oil wells to enhance safety, sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The Recommended Practice is designated 65-3, Wellbore Plugging and Abandonment.
API develops petroleum, natural gas and petrochemical equipment and operating standards. The organization maintains more than 700 standards and Recommended Practices. Some have been incorporated into state and federal regulations.
Recommended Practice 65-3 is stated to provide guidance addressing:
- Design, placement and verification of cement plugs used in wells that will be temporarily or permanently closed
- Well remediation and verification of annular barriers, reinforcing groundwater protection and emissions retention
